The world of knowledge is at your fingertips

Google is our ally in researching. With an internet connection, the worldwide web of information is only one click away. Ostensibly, digging information online is not that big of a deal. Or is it? If you think of it, the dilemma is not where to find the information you need, but your retrieval method in the seemingly endless continuum of knowledge and data. More crucial discussion lies in whether the information you unearthed in the first place is accurate. With the rampant fake news, falsified statements, and manipulated data to catch the public’s eye, how will you be an information literate individual in cyberspace?

WHAT IS THIS SITE

all about?

In August 2020, my groupmates and I created the website: Cyber Learning Gurus. As full-time distance learners of the University of the Philippines Open University, the pioneer of distance education in the country, we collectively decided to create an Open Educational Resource (OER) that shall help the students who are new to distance education learn about online learning.

My contribution to the said OER is the third module called "Finding and Sharing Information Online."  As a distance learner myself, I am aware that undergraduate studies are not merely about readings, memorization, and exam-taking. In most cases, we are asked to synthesize knowledge based on the lessons - be it an essay, write-up, reaction paper, or full-blown research work. Professors uphold high expectations of higher education students, from how we treat them and our fellow students up to the quality of our submissions. Therefore, each coursework where we are required to produce knowledge includes the inevitable task of researching – which seems like getting lost in outer space at times because the world wide web is no longer a planet but a galaxy.

This website is the revised version of the third module from the Cyber Learning Gurus website. An OER which highlights the importance of information literacy in this day and age of the fourth information revolution and shares some of the tips and tricks I have accumulated throughout the years of being a Cyber Iska. Some information here is personally discovered, while the rest is learned from professor-assigned readings. Each page is a section of the module that would help you to become an information literate individual. An enormous deal of information can be obtained from images, videos, and audio (e.g., podcasts). However, this module primarily focuses on textual information, although some points are relatively applicable to information presented via other media forms.

I hope you would apply the learnings and principles on this site in your academic life and as you face the real world, where information rapidly travels via word of mouth. If you're ready, then let's get literate!
